Choose a replacement furnace filter by actual size
For: Homeowners comparing a replacement filter for their exact HVAC equipment.
This guide answers: How do nominal labels, actual dimensions and filtration requirements fit together?
Have ready: Your equipment model and instructions, required actual length, width and thickness, and permitted filter specification.
Start with your equipment instructions and the dimensions of the specified replacement. A nominal pack label is not the actual filter size.
Before heavier winter use: what is your next step?
- The dimensions and specification match: Continue comparing the exact selected filter variant. Matching numbers alone do not confirm airflow, sealing or installation compatibility.
- A dimension or specification differs: Stop. Do not force a filter into place or choose the nearest size; recheck the instructions and ask the equipment manufacturer or a qualified HVAC professional.
- A required detail is unknown: Record the equipment model and obtain the missing actual dimensions or permitted filter specification before choosing a product.
MERV is a filtration rating, not proof of fit or system suitability. The listed MERV 8 examples are not a universal recommendation. Follow the manufacturer’s inspection and replacement guidance; a calendar date does not replace a condition check.

1. Identify the required replacement
Record your equipment model and the size specified by its manual. A removed filter can be a useful cross-check, but it is not proof that the previous filter was correct.
2. Compare all three actual dimensions
Compare length, width and thickness. Length and width can be reversed for a numerical comparison; thickness remains separate. Do not substitute a nearest size or force a filter into a slot.
| Nominal label | Actual dimensions (in) |
|---|---|
| 20 × 20 × 1 | 19.5 × 19.5 × 0.75 |
| 16 × 20 × 1 | 15.5 × 19.5 × 0.75 |
| 16 × 25 × 1 | 15.5 × 24.5 × 0.75 |
These are size examples checked October 25, 2026, not a current availability list. Other brands or variants with the same nominal label may differ.
Worked example: actual size is not the pack label
If your equipment instructions require an actual filter size of 15.5 × 19.5 × 0.75 inches and permit MERV 8, the reviewed Nordic Pure reference with those numbers has a nominal label of 16 × 20 × 1. This only establishes that the entered dimensions match this reference; it does not guarantee clearance, sealing or system compatibility.
Stop on a mismatch: If any required actual dimension differs, the manual specifies a different filter type, or MERV 8 is not permitted, do not select a nearest-size substitute. Recheck the model and instructions, then ask the manufacturer or an HVAC professional before ordering.
3. Confirm filtration requirements separately
An exact dimensional match does not establish airflow, sealing or system compatibility. Choose MERV 8 only when permitted by the equipment instructions. If the instructions and measurements disagree, ask the equipment manufacturer or a qualified HVAC professional.
